Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure and pride that we announce the 28th International Epilepsy Congress organised jointly by the International League Against Epilepsy and the International Bureau for Epilepsy, to be held in Budapest, Hungary from 28th June to 2nd July 2009. This will mark the centenary of the foundation of ILAE, which took place in Budapest in 1909 and this historic event will be celebrated during the congress.

Budapest, which is the capital city of Hungary, was created out of the unification of the separate historic towns of Buda, Pest and Obuda in 1873. The River Danube flows majestically through the centre of this modern city, with Buda located on the west of the river and Pest on the plains to the east. The city possesses a rich and vibrant cultural heritage and there are many wonderful places to visit, including the Parliament, Heroes Square, Gellért Hill, the Opera House and Matthias Church. You may enjoy the spectacular view of Buda Castle and the Bank of the Danube which both belong to the World Heritage. The Music Academy and the new National Concert Hall with brilliant acoustics is the home of the famous Hungarian music rooted from Liszt, Bartók and Kodály. Budapest is also known as 'City of Spas', as there are a dozen thermal bath complexes served by over a hundred natural thermal springs. While in Budapest, you also might like to try some of the city’s tasty local dishes and delicious Hungarian wines.

Work has already begun on the scientific programme for the 28th International Epilepsy Congress which promises to bring you the latest information on both the social and scientific aspects of epilepsy. We sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will be able to contribute by submitting an abstract.

The International League Against Epilepsy and the International Bureau for Epilepsy look forward to welcoming you to Budapest in 2009 and we hope that you will benefit greatly from the scientific programme, make new acquaintances and renew old friendships on this great occasion.
